Antique Fire Gasoline Truck / Cable Tool Well Drilling Machine Hose Reel. There are no identifying brand or casting marks or numbers. Weight of reel assembled, as seen in first 2 pics is 45 pounds+. Hoop wheel diameter 29" +-, made of 7/8" OD medium wall, steel tube stock. Axle rod is 30 - 1/4", made of 3/4" iron rod stock.
Axle sleeve is 1+ , outside diameter, pipe stock. Nuts are 1 - 1/2. Spokes are made of 1/2 solid rod stock. Spoked cast iron hubs measures 13 tip to tip across, and are cast iron, with no cracks or repairs. One hoop has considerable rust and loss around spoke receiving holes, picture 6 shows the worst 2, the rest of receiving holes get gradually better but not much.
The other hoop has proper diameter receiving holes, on 5 holes, one is rusted out half again, bigger than spoke. 5 of the 6 U-shaped spokes are bent out of true square, the 6th is pretty close to original condition. 3 of the tips of spokes have proper length but have significant corrosion, as seen in picture 9, the rest are significantly intact. The axle end cap bushings were fastened with a weld / braise at tip / end of axle rod. I belt sanded the weld off one end to remove. The other end remains welded. Axle end cap outside diameter is 1. Although solid and sound, the axle rod and sleeve interior have rust and corrosion. This reel was on a homemade A-frame bracket, at back, top, on a cable tool, well drilling machine rig, at one time. That rig was on a used 1927 REO Speed wagon truck, with a Flint and Walling well drilling machine.
This well machine was a Rube Goldberg contraption that was put together from several mechanical origins such as gasoline truck hose reels, capstans, and other miscellaneous well drillers spools for derrick ropes and hoses. The reason reel spokes got bent, was because it was turned sideways, table style, and had a 4' high, pile of 1-1/2 manila rope on it, in barn, for 55+ years.
I did see another reel out there on the internet that favored this one, that was attributed to Boston Coupling Co.
